What is Zuvaa?
Zuvaa was an online community and marketplace for African-inspired fashion and accessories that helped connect artisans with consumers across the world. In addition, it provided customers with background stories about the culture as well as the experiences of the designers.
Who is the Zuvaa Founder?
Kelechi Anyadiegwu is the founder and former CEO of Zuvaa. She graduated from Carnegie Melon University in 2014 with a Master’s degree in Computer-Human Interaction. Shortly thereafter, she began working as a Web Design Consultant for MEMS Industry Group.
She then worked as a Board Member for the Young Men & Women’s African Heritage Association in 2013, as well as a Social Media Manager and Community Manager from 2013 to 2014. Kelechi currently works as a Digital Marketing Brand Specialist and is also the founder and current CEO of UjuuMedia.
As a first-generation Nigerian, Anyadiegwu was inspired by the vibrant colors and fascinating patterns of African fabrics, often receiving compliments whenever she would wear them.
She was always happy to refer people to the clothing designers, but she began to realize there was an opportunity in the e-commerce world for an African-inspired marketplace.
Using her technical skills in online community building, she created and launched Zuvaa in 2014 with a $500 investment. Over the next two years, Zuvaa generated over $2 million in sales and opened multiple pop-up shops across the country.
What Happened After Shark Tank Update
Is Zuvaa Still in Business?
In 2019, Anyadiegwu issued a public letter to announce the shutdown of Zuvaa. According to the letter, the company simply grew too fast and lacked the infrastructure to deal with the demand.
While the original plan was to reopen under new management in 2020, it appears Zuva has permanently closed its doors.
However, with the emergence of Anyadiegwu’s new company UjuuMedia, there is no doubt she has learned from her failure and become a better entrepreneur – lining herself up for more success in the future.
