Company Background

What is Wanna Date?

Are you looking for a low-calorie, sugar-free, healthy, vegan-friendly spread? Then Wanna Date is right up your alley. Offering several varieties of flavors, with the chief ingredient being the fruit dates.

You can use it on sandwiches or as an added ingredient to make cookies, muffins, crepes, and so much more as a healthier sweetener alternative.

Who Owns Wanna Date?

Melissa Bartow founded Wanna Date in 2017 while still at college. A New York University graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurship who previously worked part-time internships as a photographer for magazines, server at food vendors, and brand ambassador.

Melissa remains with the company, which she now does full-time as the CEO in conjunction with her investor partners.

Founder’s Story

Melissa discovered dates while at college in New York and immediately fell in love with them, feeling they ticked all the right boxes: Naturally sweet, healthy, a mood enhancer, and body energizer.

However, while working as an intern at a food vendor part-time in college, she was disappointed to learn that their so-called healthy menu items were laden with additional sugar. Wondering why dates couldn’t be used as a substitute for sugar, she looked for products on the market but couldn’t find any. So she bought a food processor and began trials of her dorm room made version of date butter.

Experimenting by adding additional ingredients, and after positive feedback from friends, Wanna Date was born.

After designing a few labels, Melissa then posted a few promotional videos on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo, raising about $10,000.

Then after self-teaching herself through Business 101 on Google, she took her product to market—selling online and shipping her products directly from her dorm room. Finally, to scale manufacturing and reach a bigger market, Melissa started looking for an investor.
