What is SunStaches?
SunStaches is not your regular business idea. The team behind it began with one goal: to make people smile. And how they do it? They make fashion-forward and themed sunglasses and accessories! They recently also began selling face shields and blue light glasses.
The creators of SunStaches – Dan Gershon, David Levich, and Eric Liberman are high-school buddies. Dan received his Bachelor of Science in Management Science from the University of San Diego. David and Eric studied at California State University, Northridge. David, the original creator of SunStaches initially began selling watches but later called upon his friends to join in before capitalizing on the then-growing market for sunglasses.
SunStaches was born when the trio decided to help a friend who couldn’t grow a mustache with a mustache stuck to a pair of sunglasses. What started off as a joke quickly became the beginning of a line with novelty sunglasses with mustaches attached.
This is when the team realized they could improvise further and started rolling out dressed-up and themed sunglasses. They began their venture with a paltry $200 in 2002 and after a few years, had a complete line of characters from cowboys to pirates and licensed SunStaches with sports teams and the Ninja Turtles.
Bill Murray, Justin Bieber and a host of big names were customers. The company sold their glasses on Amazon and at Urban Outfitters, Toys R Us and Party City and earned a revenue of about $6 million annually. The team were seeking $300,000 for a 5% stake when they entered Shark Tank in 2011.
