The Squatty Potty is the FDA approved bathroom stool helping people poop, one step at a time. The product has since grown into a massive success due to its simplicity and effectiveness towards solving a common, longstanding issue.

The idea for the Squatty Potty came to life after Judy who was struggling with constipation, an issue faced by millions of Americans, realized that the act of squatting helped to move things along.

With the help of her son, Bobby, the Edwards began looking for a natural and inexpensive way to treat to address the issue of constipation. Further research lead them to the discovery that the squatting position relaxes and straightens the rectum and relieved other issues like bloating and hemorrhoids.

Enlisting the help of a neighbor and his wood shop, the first Squatty Potty came to life in July of 2011. After seeing how successfully the new stepping stool worked, they decided it was a solution that should be shared with the world. But although the original worked well, it was heavy and not as scalable.

The Edwards got to work and began production of their Squatty Potty in China. But it wasn’t until they brought manufacturing back home that they really began to get things moving. According to Bobby, “It’s actually much trimmer and leaner manufacturing in the United States for our product.”

With a 30 million view viral video, and appearances on the The Doctors and Dr.Oz, the Squatty was well on its way to becoming a breakout hit.

Squatty Potty on Shark Tank

By the time the Squatty Potty entered the Tank in 2014, they had already sold several million dollars worth of product. The Sharks were initially apprehensive considering their outrageous valuation until they heard the numbers.

Robert Herjavec thought it would be too difficult to change consumers’ habits in the bathroom with a new product and declined to make an offer.

Kevin O’Leary had warmed up to the business, made an offer of $350,000 for 10% of the business which they felt was too much.
Mark Cuban though the valuation was off and Barbara Corcoran didn’t like Bobby, so they both chose not to invest.

Lori Greiner liked the product and made the same offer as Kevin, but noted her QVC connections which the Edwards eventually accepted.

Squatty Potty After Shark Tank

Within days of their Shark Tank appearance, the Squatty Potty sold over $1 million worth of the poop stools and over $12 million in the three months after.

Since then, the Squatty Potty has received $15.7 million in funding and has moved from online to Bed, Bath & Beyond, Costco, Walmart and more.
