Company Background

What is Sanaia Applesauce?

Sanaia is a brand of island-inspired, organic applesauces destined to carve out an identity in the market as the only brand thats made for adults applesauce lovers.

Every jar of Sanaia is made with organic green apples infused with actual apple wedges and authentic island flavors.

Who is the Sanaia Applesauce Founder?

Keisha Smith-Jeremie is the inventor of Sanaia Applesauce. Before her stint in entrepreneurship, she was already an established career woman. Keisha ably performed her responsibility as the head of HR at a Fortune 500 company while also establishing Sanaia Applesauce. She is currently working at Tory Burch.

Founder’s Story

Her first batch of applesauce was created as a remedy for homesickness while facing the cold East Coast winters as a college student at the University of Virginia.

Over time, Keisha refined her gourmet applesauce recipe by infusing guava and tamarind fruits – flavors reminiscent of her childhood on the island of Bahamas.

Inspired by her culinary creation, Keisha set out to find more exotic flavors that paired well with the organic green apples she used in her applesauces. Blackberry, Hibiscus, lavender and ginger were eventually added to the variety of applesauces in Sanaia’s line up.

Eventually, Keisha decided to turn her love of applesauce from a hobby into a business. She began researching the process from chef to entrepreneur and found herself in front of a book called Good Food, Great Business by Susie Wyshak. After reading the book she contacted the author, asked for a consultation and began building Sanaia.

Keisha invested $500,000 of her own money to get the company started. During this time, she continued working as a human resources executive as her parents and siblings were dependent on her for financial support.

Despite undertaking the business venture on a part-time basis, the pilot test was able to amass sales worth $40000. These sales signified that, indeed, adult applesauce was a novel market worth exploring. She was able to stock her products in retailers like Walmart and Aldi.

Her hard work and determination would soon pay off. In just nine months after launching the company, Keisha received an email from Shark Tank producers inviting her to apply for the show.

3 weeks later she would be pitching to the Sharks. In those 3 weeks, Keisha watched hours and hours of Shark Tank, and with her team practiced relentlessly in preparation for the show.

Sanaia appeared on Shark Tank in 2018 during Season 10 Episode 2. Despite objections to her working full-time while working on the business, overall the Sharks were impressed. Keisha left the Tank with a deal from Mark Cuban of $150,000 for 25% of Sanaia.

Is Sanaia Applesauce Still in Business?

Keisha has continued working full-time, now as the Chief People Officer with New York fashion designer, Tory Burch.

The deal with Mark Cuban appears to have not closed, but Sanaia has since raised $750,000 in funding, according to Business Insider.

Unfortunately, Sanaia Applesauce is out of business. Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Keisha was forced to stop the production of Sanaia Applesauce. The company’s website is still functional. However, the sales page shows that all the products are sold out.
