What is Novel Effect?

Novel Effect is an application for children and families. The app uses voice recognition to bring stories to life. You can use a hard copy book and it will go to the screen on your phone or tablet. You can download the app from the Apple Store or Google Play.

Who are the Founders of Novel Effect?

The co-founders of Novel Effect are Matt and Melissa Hammersley. Prior to starting Novel Effect, Matt was a patent attorney and Melissa was a graphic designer that specialized in patent drawings. Melissa is now the Chief Product Officer for Novel Effect and Matt is the CEO of Novel Effect.

Founder’s Story

Melissa and Matt Hammersley got the idea for Novel Effect in 2015 while attending a get-together with close friends to celebrate a baby shower for their unborn child.

A friend of theirs was reading a children’s book in a funny and animated way, using sound effects where necessary, that had the child’s full attention, and the child was thoroughly enjoying it.

So this got them thinking, if every book were read like this, it would encourage more children to pick up the hobby and continue reading into their later years.

After a few months of pondering over it, Matt just couldn’t let the idea go of combining reading with voice recognition. So together with Melissa, he co-founded the company, and they moved their young family to Seattle.

There they partnered with retail giant Amazon. In partnership with Alexa, the company’s voice-recognition device, they received funding from a special grant that promotes innovative ways to use the product and develop it further.

Once ready for market, they began promoting the company and got spotted at a music festival in Texas by a Shark Tank producer.
