Naturally Perfect Dolls is a line of dolls with facial features and hair true to women of color to encourage self-acceptance and diversity.

Naturally Perfect Dolls began in 2015 when co-founder Angelica Sweeting realized her daughter was not happy with her appearance and wished to look more like the dolls she played with.

Sweeting developed the Angelica Doll to create a new standard of beauty for her daughter and other little girls like her.

By summer 2015, Naturally Perfect Dolls had successfully raised over $84,000 with 1300+ backers on Kickstarter.

NATURALLY PERFECT DOLLS ON SHARK TANK

Naturally Perfect Dolls aired on Shark Tank on Season 8, episode 12 in early January 2017.

After going into detail about their company, Kevin A.K.A “King of All Dolls” A.K.A “the Dollologist” A.K.A “the Dollatollah” A.K.A “the Dollai Lama”, points out that diversified dolls have been attempted by much larger companies.

Lori calls them “impressive” but says its not the right investment for her and goes out.

Both Robert and Mark feel their vision is too scattered and goes out.

Kevin says he’s lived this life already and didn’t love it (referring to his work with Mattel – the makers of Barbie) and goes out.

Fortunately for them, Daymond makes them an offer which they ultimately accept.

LIFE AFTER SHARK TANK

After their episode aired, the company managed to completely sell out of their dolls.

Unfortunately, Naturally Perfect Dolls hasn’t been running as perfectly as its line of diversity and self-acceptance dolls.

The company was forced to shut down its website as it underwent rebranding and changes to the company name due to trademark issues. And initial investor, Daymond is no longer in the picture.

The company’s Facebook page features a long list of negative reviews from angry customers who’ve yet to receive their products. Though many people feel the Sweetings are scammers, it seems more likely that their failures are due to gross incompetence and a complete lack of business sense. Clearly, not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur.

A NEW DIRECTION

Earlier this year, the founders initiated a new crowdfunding campaign for a line of collectible, STEM toys for girls of different ethnicities based on the elements of the periodic table.

In a Youtube video message, the Sweetings discussed the reason behind their new project. Apparently they had received numerous emails from people who felt that an African-American focused brand was inappropriate.

In response, they created the “Epic Ellements”. Unfortunately, the crowdfunding campaign for the new line of diverse dolls did not reach its goal and was cancelled.

It seems the Sweetings have now given up on both projects. The website still lists the dolls as available for pre-order but it is very obvious that nothing is being sold.

It is August 2018 and I am still waiting on a delivery from a October order. I am so disappointed – I reached out several times. I asked how can you be launching more items when you have failed to deliver the 1st – This was the response: First, thank you for your feedback. A customer service representative forwarded me your email and I wanted to answer and clarify some of these points personally. It is possible to have two completely different lines of dolls with different production and shipping dates. We recently switched manufacturers for our 18inch line and… Read more »

This piece is very informative, however, you’ve missed mentioning the largest multicultural doll company. The World of EPI. The owner an African American woman, Dr. Lisa, has created two doll lines: The Fresh Dolls (TheFreshDolls.com) and Positively Perfect (@PostivelyPerfectDolls). Please note more information can be found at TheDrLisa.com.
