Mensch on a Bench Company is a producer of plush toys with accompanying books that explains the Jewish traditions of Hanukkah. The company first produced Moshe the Mensch. Gradually, the company has expanded to produce Ask Papa, Dreidel Dog, Mitzah Moose, and Hannah the Hannukah Hero. The stuffed animals give Jewish children an opportunity to celebrate Hanukkah.
Who is the Founder of Mensch on a Bench?
Neal Hoffman is the creator of Mensch on a Bench. His foray into the toy business was not new as he was a marketing executive for Hasbro, a toy company. After noticing the gap in the market quit, he established the company. Neal is still the CEO of Mensch on a Bench.
Neal’s creation of Mensch on a Bench can be considered a lucky find and a calculated risk. Lucky because had he not taken his child shopping, he couldn’t have thought about the idea. A calculated risk because coming from the toy background, it was easy for him to spot an opportunity.
Neal wanted to create toys that were the Jewish equivalence of Elf on a Shelf. Once he thought about the idea, he put it into action. He sought to raise funds through crowdsourcing, where he raised $22,000. He used the proceeds to produce 500 pieces of Mensch on a Bench which quickly sold out.
Even before attending Shark Tank, Mensch on a Bench was already a successful company thanks to finding a niche market. Through the leadership of Neal, they had already made sales amounting to $100,000.
