Who Owns Mee Ma’s Gumbo?

Carol Foster founded Mee Mas Gumbo in 2007. She is a single mother and a former truck driver. Ms. Foster is a re-located Louisiana native, and she developed an old family recipe into a N’Awlins favorite and started selling it online after founding her company. The once homeless truck driver is currently the powerhouse behind a successful company.

Founder’s Story

Carol Foster founded the Mee Mas Gumbo product when she attempted to prepare a bunch of Gumbo after receiving requests from her friends and family. She got the gumbo recipe from her grandmother.

She was motivated to start the business after finding out the gaps in the grocery store offerings. It made her create an idea that there was a need for a fresh gumbo recipe that wasn’t powdered. She started by selling the product to family, friends, and churchgoers.

As her target market grew she developed a branding trademark, MEE-MA’s®, that’s found on all her products, and registered it to prevent ill-minded individuals from copying her idea. The brand name stands for homemade flavor, comfort food, added value, and convenience for easy preparation.

Since its launch in 2007, the company has expanded its product line to include ready-to-eat meals and other tasty Southern food fares.

In 2010, Ms. Foster started selling to Costco’s Southern California Region, and the product became available in Albertsons Companies stores in 2014. She aims to increase the distribution channels to make the product available to multiple markets.
