What is the Lifter Hamper?
The Lifter Hamper is a bungee spring-loaded laundry basket that goes down as you add laundry to it; however, it rises back up when you need to take them out to add it to your washing machine/dryer. It has four lockable wheels, so it’s easily transportable while remaining in place when needed. In addition, it saves you the hassle of having to bend over—ideal for those with back issues.
Who is the Founder of the Lifter Hamper?
The founder of the Lifter Hamper is Marvin Phillip, a former NFL player who had his career ended due to an injury. Marvin remains active in the business today.
Despite getting no deal on Shark Tank, his appearance raised his product awareness. He raised funds by crowdfunding and has since taken his product to market, selling it primarily online (Amazon), securing a few deals along the way, most notable with Household Essentials, a large retailer in household goods.
Marvin was drafted to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2006. Two years later, a back injury sidelined him for the rest of the season and made it difficult for him to bend over.
This injury pretty much ended Marvin’s professional playing days, but during his recovery, he still wanted to help around the house, mainly doing the laundry.
However, the constant bending over continued to give him issues. So he decided to invent the Lifter Hamper. He invested around $75,000 of his funds into creating a design and getting a patent.
However, he lacked the funds to go into production and go to market. He did, in the interim, manage to secure contracts with e-retailers, including Amazon.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed and unsure of himself, Marvin began to look for an investor who could not only help him go to production, but who could also act as a mentor and give advice on how to improve the product too.
