What is Hells Bells Helmets

Hells Bells Helmets is a company in Philadelphia that makes and sells patented, custom-designed 3D sculpted helmets. The company has been around since 1993 and specializes in sculpted motorcycle helmets.

Each helmet is custom designed in addition to being certified by the Department of Transportation.

Founder’s Story

Marix Stone, a sculpture artist, and motorcycle fanatic wanted to put his skills and passion into good use. So, Stone decided to design motorcycle helmets in 1993 and has been experimenting with different designs since then.

He made it his mission to design custom helmets for bikers and eventually transitioned to a made-to-order business where each helmet was uniquely customized. Dr. Nancy Tanchel then later joined Stone and together they built the Hells Bells Helmets company.

In 2010, Marix and Dr. Nancy pitched the business to the Sharks where they hoped to land Daymond John, a well know motorcycle enthusiast.

What Happened After Shark Tank Update

Did Hells Bells Helmets Get a Deal on Shark Tank

In Season 1 Episode 11 of Shark Tank, Marix Stone and Nancy Tanchel left the Shark Tank with a deal from Daymond John of $500,000 for 50% of their company, a $1 million-dollar valuation.

After the show ended, there was a lot of back and forth with Daymond John, and eventually, both parties walked away with no contract intact. The three didn’t seem to agree on the finer details of the contract.

According to the founders, they decided to walk away from the deal because Daymond wanted to take production to China. Stone believed that taking the product o China would drastically reduce the quality of the helmets.

When asked why he left the deal, Stone replied “I have been to China prior to being on the show and knew they weren’t capable of making any helmet designs to my specifications and the quality I required. They have been cranking out junk for years, everyone has seen the crap they produce. Handing my designs over to them would have killed my brand for sure. What’s so great about that?”

Is Hells Bells Helmets Still In Business?

Although the duo walked away without a deal, that didn’t necessarily spell bad news for the company. In fact, the business continued to grow after the shark tank experience.

In addition to creating 3D sporting helmets, the company also designs 3D designs for gas fenders and tanks on motorcycles and hired other fabricators to help with their mass productions.

The company also received so much attention after the show that they secured a deal with FX TV show “Sons of Anarchy” where a few of their custom helmets were featured.

Today, business is still booming for the company, that has now rebranded to BadAss Helmet, where their product line now includes apparel and even helmets for dogs!
