What is Grouphug?
Grouphug is a tech company which produces compact, easy-to-incorporate solar panels which fit neatly and stylishly onto any standard window. The product has a built-in rechargeable battery, so devices can be charged day or night, and features a USB port in order to be compatible with most devices, including iPhones, Androids, AirPods, and more. Grouphug also sells a few sustainability-related accessories, such as their I’m No Fossil Fool tote and official Grouphug branded hat.
Who Owns Grouphug?
The innovative tech company was founded in Brooklyn by Krystal Persaud. Krystal graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with the highest distinction, summa cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design. She demonstrated her passion for sustainability and social responsibility even during her college years, being an active member of Students Organizing for Sustainability. After finishing her education, she worked as an adjunct professor at the New Jersey Institute for Technology, Parsons School of Design, and School of Visual Arts. She also spent some time working as a Combine Accelerator at NYC Media Lab which served to further hone her entrepreneurial skill set.
Grouphug initially began as an activist design collective. As part of this collective, members produced an annual exhibition tackling a pressing and often complicated issue, such as the past topic of gun violence.
In 2014, the collective decided to focus on energy. The looming threat of ecological collapse is weighty and urgent.
In the face of this, Krystal felt a moral obligation to expand accessibility to renewable energy sources; and by using her knowledge, experience, and talents, she was able to find one such solution: Grouphug Solar Panels.
What Happened After Shark Tank Update
Is Grouphug Still in Business?
Today, Grouphug is still open for business and doing better than ever. One year after the brand’s feature on Shark Tank, they went on to sell their solar panels to customers in nearly every state in the country, receive national press coverage, manufacture their Window Solar Charger (for day and night use), and receive ongoing mentorship from Shark Mark Cuban. Grouphug’s products are currently available for purchase on their website, grouphugtech.com, and the company looks forward to future growth, expansion, and development.
