Company Background

What is FunCakes Rental?

FunCakes are artificial tiered cakes made of styrofoam layers that have been covered in real fondant icing to make them look just like actual wedding cakes. These pseudo-custom-designed cakes are not only easy to transport to the venue but also a significantly less expensive option for the couple’s big day.

Who Owns FunCakes Rental?

Kimberly Aya, a long-time baker who lives in Grand Rapids, used to own a bakery in Europe before moving back to Michigan. She now owns FunCakes with her son in Grand Rapids, which creates the fake cakes for weddings. The goal is to offer brides a more affordable confection option.

Founder’s Story

Kimberly learned about the use of fake cakes while attending a bridal show back in 2007, and it opened her eyes to the possibilities. At the show, she also learned about the hidden compartment in the styrofoam cakes.

The slot contains one slice of real cake so that the bride and groom could still cut the fake cake. FunCakes was born as a result of that event.

Kimberly started creating the faux cakes for display and then providing a regular sheet cake to be sliced up and served to the guests. And no one could tell the difference.

What Happened After Shark Tank Update

Is FunCakes Still in Business?

FunCakes is still a thriving business today and has entered the realm of Hollywood. A FunCake was featured in the Hangover movie, and they’ve made appearances on tv. The website boasts numerous cake choices, even moving beyond weddings to other celebrations, and they can ship the cakes to any location.
